When you are planning your trip around New Zealand it's a great idea to have a detailed road map in front of you. Remember that New Zealand has very few straight roads and driving often takes longer than at home. Many tourists spend their whole trip on the road rather than getting the chance to experience the country due to inadequate planning. There is a lot to see and do so allow plenty of time to stop along the way, take photos and leave a few footprints.

We've travelled extensively around the world with Lonely Planet guides. New Zealand is easy to get around and very traveller friendly if you are happy to ask locals for advice along the way. However if you feel more comfortable carrying a guide with you or want to plan in advance for your trip then before you leave home buy Lonely Planet New Zealand (published Sep 2006).
