Northern Gateway Toll Road Information

As of January 2009 there are 3 possible routes into Northland:

  1. The new tunnel/motorway road (one-way toll of $2 for cars and $4 for trucks)

  2. The free route along Hibiscus Coast

  3. State Highway 16 through Helensville

We recommend the new toll road to make your journey faster and easier. The toll is calculated electronically so either pay in advance or within 3 days of using the toll road. New Zealand Road Atlas

When you are planning your trip around New Zealand it's a great idea to have a detailed road map in front of you. Remember that New Zealand has very few motorways and driving often takes longer than at home. Many tourists spend their whole trip on the road rather than getting the chance to experience the country due to inadequate planning. There is a lot to see and do so allow plenty of time to stop along the way, take photos and leave a few footprints.

Lonely Planet New Zealand

We've travelled extensively around the world with Lonely Planet guides. New Zealand is relatively easy to get around and traveller friendly if you are happy to ask locals for advice along the way. However it's always handy to have a guide to use as a starting point, a quick reference or when you are sitting on a plane (or with your feet up).  Start planning before you leave home with Lonely Planet NZ (published Sep 2006).
